'The Greater Good are out of their Minds'
by Peter Willows for Globaltone Magazine, October 2003

The Greater Good is A.madeus, Jake the Snake, Prone-2, SPEKS, Witty Wiz, and B-Leaf.

The aim is politically charged, a raging artform entirely mutating all that is into something very different, yet oddly familiar, and comfortingly so.  The fabled "next level" may not be so far away.  Odd in a nice way, six visions collide to create the spectrum that is ... Battle Story Next.  The Hexagonal Teachers of rhyme, speak and spell like wizards invincible to their enzymes, "it's scary" said one of their fans.  "I feel like when these guys freestyle they are reading the collective mind.  The whole vibe changes.  Have you ever been to one of their shows?  Shit is crazy ... mafuckas be conjuring ghosts.  That one gig at All Asia when Pac and Biggie, I swear to fuckin' God, stood by the window looking in and then like ... disappeared around the corner.  That shit is fucking nuts.  Mafuckas turning water into wine on stage and shit ... these mafuckas scare me."

Although The Greater Good experience may carry power (trust not what you read, do not believe this author, see it for yourself) frightening their audience is not the sum of it, says R.O.T.E. co-founder Snakeman.  "The math is all hexagonal lyrically homey, lemme field this one.  Look get this shit straight:  everything we spit, everything we do, everything that you ever feel or hear at one of our shows or on one of our albums, songs WHATEVER.  All that shit is carefully arranged and calculations are made before everything.  Even the fuckups, everything is made, engineered, to illicit specific vibrations from whomever is hearing the music."  And heads wonder why every member of The Good carries a calculator with them.  "This ain't Nerd Rap man, but if a nerd is someone who takes what they do very very seriously, then nerds we are."

Prone-2 shakes his head NO with an ardent disapproval.  "What the fuck is shit?"  Obviously caught off guard.  Suddenly the entire group begins to travel out in various angles.  Later A.madeus would teach me how this contention is positive and constructive, "what you have when it is just the 6 of us chilling and harmonizing is 2d hexagon.  Each MC in the cipher is a point that makes up the gon.  When we all start arguing each of us takes our point in that hexagon and travels out into space with it" Amz laughs, I'm obviously not getting it, "the ideal is eventually for all of us to arrive at the same point in space with our travel and begin to reconnect the rays.  This is higher dimensional shit ... things I don't think you're ready for."  The travelling continues.

"Bill Gates is a nerd, and that son is the richest brother in this system."  B-Leaf adds.

"I can tell you one thing, I ain't no fucking nerd."  A.madeus stops the music.

"Yeah but yo, is the dude rich spiritually?"  Prone-2 brings truth to the light.  "Dude might have all the loot physically, but dude might be poorer than the poorest in his soul."

A chorus of "true thats" in agreement echo Prone's sentiment.  Perhaps this other dimension, A.madeus spoke of has been established?

If you look through this veil of otherworldlyness that surrounds The Good, there is an observable method to the madness.  They say they go from numbers to letters on almost all there shit.  B-Leaf explains, "we approach the whole shit a lot differently than almost everybody, yet I'm already saying too much, because I already begin to not make sense."  The rest of the guys in The Good laugh and smile affirmatively as B-Leaf (Benny Blanco) tries to make sense of himself.  "I'm not good at this."  He says sheepishly.  A.madeus, the beantown veteran and proverbial Big Brother of the group in harmony with Witty Wiz, another MC whose been on the scene for years, interject finishing each other's sentences "basically what he's saying is that anything that can be said can ... and will exist ... given the proper amount of trust ... and correct amplitude of ... belief."  They all laugh.

"Yo man shit is real" SPEKS sets the record straight.  "We're doing this for the one love.  This is true from the root music here. We ain't no big business, and we ain't selling ourselves either. Ain't no hoes in this crew."

     "God Bless God" B-Leaf interrupts.

SPEKS "The music we make is strictly independent, fuck these corporate hobos, this dog and pony Hip Hop, that ain't what this is about.  This is about reality, as gritty as history tells it and as exquisite as we see it becoming.  This ain't about killing and dying anymore, the lesson now is introspection.  Look within, inner kingdom, Godbody knowledge, wisdom, and understanding all that man.  One thing is absolute, we ain't here to cater to that which already is ... we're the architects of that which has yet to come ... and believe me the best is yet to come."
